Tennis: Rebels’ Malec ranked 20th

UNLV senior Katarina Malec rose six spots to a career-high of 20th in the WingspanBank.com collegiate tennis rankings. Malec, who is 20-5 on the season in singles, is the second-highest ranked Lady Rebel in history behind Marianne Vallin, who twice rose as high as fourth from 1994-97.
The UNLV women's team (5-4) fell two spots to No. 68. On the men's side, the Rebels (3-5) dropped a spot to No. 61 and have no individuals ranked.
* Top-ranked Martina Hingis beat Chanda Rubin 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the State Farm Classic, while Monica Seles, unseeded in a WTA event for the first time since 1989, defeated Croatian Silvija Talaja 6-1, 7-6 (7) in a first-round match at Scottsdale, Ariz.
*Jan-Michael Gambill defeated Spain's Julian Alonso 6-4, 3-0 (retired) in a first-round match of the Citrix Championships at Delray Beach, Fla.
