LV company plans Texas cruising casino

Thursday, March 2, 2000 | 11:17 a.m.

Viva Gaming & Resorts Inc. of Las Vegas announced plans to launch a daily casino cruise from the port city of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Viva Gaming received approval for a five-year dock lease from the Port of Corpus Christi Wednesday, the company said. With the lease, the company said it plans to launch two daily, six-hour cruises by Memorial Day.

It will be the first such cruise to be launched from Corpus Christi.

Since casino gaming is not permitted in Texas, the boat will sail into international waters before gambling is permitted. It will offer 860 slot machines and 50 table games, and have a capacity of more than 800 passengers. Viva Gaming expects to carry at least 1,500 passengers a day on the cruise.

"This is just the kind of thing that could really jump start our summer here and our tourist industry," Bill Dodge, port commission chairman, told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The newspaper said Viva Gaming intends to spend $6 million on the project.
