In Massachusetts, scratch ticket worth $4 million still not claimed

Thursday, March 2, 2000 | 10:18 a.m.

It seems the grand prize ticket in the state's millennium scratch off game has not yet been claimed. And that means a $4 million ticket could be among the 300,000 $10 tickets still scattered in stores around the state.

"We don't know if (the grand prize ticket) has been sold yet or not," Lottery spokeswoman Shannon Cadres told The Enterprise of Brockton.

If the ticket has been sold, it hasn't been reported to lottery officials, she said. Once the ticket has been claimed, the game will end and the remaining tickets will be pulled from store shelves, she said.

The millennium tickets sparked controversy in the Legislature when they were first proposed because of their $10 price, which some lawmakers thought was too high.

But John Minihan, owner of Minihan's Handy Store in Randolph, has been trying to stock up on the remaining tickets. On Monday, his agent gave him 400. By late Tuesday, they were gone.

"As long as there are good prizes, people will play it," he said.
