Eye-opening talk scheduled for LV
The Bigelow Chair of Consciousness Studies presents a lecture by psychologist Arthur Hastings 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at UNLV in the auditorium of the Flora Dungan Humanities Building.
Hastings will discuss in the free lecture his research evoking apparitions of the deceased and its possible applications to grief therapy, as well as the possibility of life after death.
Studying the effects of hate rhetoric
The harm caused by hate speech will be the topic of the next University Forum lecture 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
Joan Callahan, a philosophy professor and director of women's studies at the University of Kentucky, will discuss "Sanctioning Speech That Harms: An Immodest Proposal." She will argue that hate speech normalizes injustice and is substantially harmful. All University Forum lectures are free. Call 895-3401.
Entertainment group reception to be held
The Entertainment Development Corporation of Las Vegas will host a cocktail reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Towers at Hughes Center, 3960 Howard Hughes Parkway, eighth floor. For reservations call the EDC offices at 368-2890.
Hone to present at Henderson bar
A genealogical seminar with Wade Hone, partner in the Salt Lake City-based Heritage Consulting and Services, will be offered 8:30 a.m. March 11 at the Joker's Wild, 920 N. Boulder Highway in Henderson. Pre-register by Saturday. Cost is $35 in advance; $40 at the door; $15 for half day in advance; and $18 at the door half day. For more information, call 225-5838.
Forum links seniors, area politicians
Seniors United will have a forum to introduce seniors to Clark County political leaders. County Assessor Mark Schofield, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lynette McDonald, Dianne Nangano of Southern Nevada Cancer Research and Jean Peyton of the Blind Connection will speak starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
All seniors are invited to the free forum. Refreshments will be served. Call 871-5528.
Clark County kicks off Summer job fair
Clark County Parks and Recreation is hosting a job fair 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday for individuals 16 and older who are interested in summer employment in recreation. The job fair will be held at Cambridge Center, 3827 S. Maryland Parkway; Desert Breeze Center, 8425 Spring Mountain Road; and Von Tobel Center, 3610 E. Carey Ave.
Summer and seasonal positions include lifeguards and swim instructors for Aquatics Programs, and recreation leaders for community centers, the Rec Mobile Program and various school sites. Call 455-8200.
Training scheduled for community group
"Techniques of Leadership Training" seminars are being offered from 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 6, 7 and 9 and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 11 at the Community Counseling Center, 1120 Almond Tree Lane, Suite No. 207.
CCC announces a community "Leadership Training Retreat" where participants will learn group facilitator techniques, resources unlimited, implementation and coordination skills and recruitment/retention. The retreat fee is $50. Call 369-8700.
LV and Carson City host notary classes
In March the Nevada Secretary of State Notaries Division will hold notary classes in Las Vegas and Carson City.
The Las Vegas class will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas City Hall, 2200 Civic Center Drive. The Carson City notary class will be from 9 a.m.-noon March 22 at the State Library, Conference Room A -- at the corner of Stewart and Musser streets.
