Heritage Days deadline draws near

Heritage Days 2000 begins April 7 with a Miss Heritage Days Beauty Pageant. All entries for young Henderson women, ages 15-18, must be received by March 10 and must accompany a $20 processing fee and proof of age.

Other events this year include the Heritage Days Talent Show, the Fox Run, the Chili Cook-off and Car Show, the Inland Empire Carnival, the Tailgate Barbecue, the Henderson High School Charity Basketball Game, the Classic Softball Tournament, the Golf Ball Roll and the Heritage Days Parade.

The annual parade, held April 15, begins at noon on Water Street.

'365 Days' to be hosted by Palrose

"A Journey into 365 Days of Black History," with Voices of the African Diaspora hosted by Ulysses Palrose, continues 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

Individuals from various cultures will discuss the history and customs unique to their native lands.

Tour offers historical retrospective

The At-a-Glance Millennium Tour, a 48-foot custom trailer featuring a museum-quality exhibit and offering a retrospective look at the history of the past millennium, will be on display 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 7000 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Completion expected at Sonata Park

Sonata Park, Henderson's newest city park and the fourth city park to be completed in the Seven Hills master-planned community, will be dedicated 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at 1515 Seven Hills Drive.

Sonata Park, a 12-acre facility, includes a soccer field, tennis and basketball courts, a picnic shelter, a tot lot and children's play equipment. For more information, call 897-7000.

Amateur radio exam offerred at CCSN

A Federal Communications Commission-approved amateur radio exam will be given at noon Saturday at the Community College of Southern Nevada, 700 College Drive, Henderson. For information and pre-registration, call Tim Hunt at 872-5268.

Henderson holds homeschooling lab

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a homeschooling workshop 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road.

The instructor, a licensed teacher and Clark County homeschooling consultant, will explore the legal options and cost factors parents, guardians and homeschooling teachers need to know. For more information, call 565-2880.

Training available for SHIP volunteers

The Division for Aging Services' Medicare State Health Insurance Advisory Program, better known as "SHIP," will conduct a free class to train volunteers to help seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries understand the complicated Medicare system. The training will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, Room 4412-E. To register call 486-3478.

'Reach for the Stars' benefit to honor Hood

The American Diabetes Association of Nevada will honor Jeanne Hood, director of American Vantage Cos., at its annual "Reach For the Stars" benefit gala 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Treasure Island hotel-casino.

The black tie-optional evening will feature a silent auction, dinner, presentation honoring Hood and dancing. Funds will support research, information and advocacy programs of the diabetes association. Tickets are $200. Call 369-9995.

Gala features Grammy nominee Carter

The Southern Nevada chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will hold a gala dinner 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Four Seasons hotel-casino. Special guest is Grammy-nominated recording artist Mel Carter.

The dinner is to help raise money for the Alzheimer's Association Southern Nevada Chapter and to honor Steve Rigazio, senior vice president of Nevada Power Co. Ticket are $125. Call 248-2770.

Hone to speak at the Joker's Wild

A genealogical seminar with Wade Hone, partner in the Salt Lake City-based Heritage Consulting and Services, will be offered 8:30 a.m. March 11 at the Joker's Wild, 920 N. Boulder Highway in Henderson. Pre-register by March 4. Cost is $35 in advance; $40 at the door; $15 for half day in advance; and $18 at the door half day. For more information, call 225-5838.

Pool planning

The new Las Vegas Municipal Pool has received a prestigious state award for excellence in park planning from the Nevada Recreation and Parks Society.

The pool and its architect, Swisher & Hall, shared the Elmer H. Anderson Award.

The facility was honored, in part, for its retractable side panels to allow open air flow, and its unique E shape that allows for different types of programming to occur at the same time.

The new pool opened last year after the 1947 Dula Pool facility was demolished and replaced with the $5.8 million aquatic center. The facility is at 431 E. Bonanza Road.
