Robert Macy, who for nearly two decades has covered some of Las Vegas' biggest news stories as correspondent for the Associated Press, retired today.
"Other opportunities came along," Macy, 63, said, noting that he will be writing a book featuring interviews with some of the more than 250 Las Vegas entertainers he has interviewed since coming here in 1981. Macy also plans to pen a nationally syndicated column about Las Vegas.
During Macy's tenure as Las Vegas AP correspondent, the local office he oversaw grew from two reporters to four.
Macy is a 1959 graduate of the University of Kansas, where he earned a journalism degree. In the 1960s, he worked in television, public relations and for newspapers, including a stint as editor of the Boonville (Mo.) Daily News.
In Las Vegas, Macy covered a wide range of subjects, including growth, the 1982 crash of Thunderbird Air Force jets that killed four, the 1984 Culinary Union Strike, the 1988 Pepcon explosion, nuclear weapons testing and major hotel openings and implosions of the last decade.
