Australia slot maker entering California, Nevada markets

Friday, June 30, 2000 | 11:01 a.m.

Aristocrat Leisure Ltd. of Sydney, Australia, said it entered the California gambling industry with orders for about 1,500 of its slot machines at Indian casinos.

Aristocrat said it's also on target to receive a license to sell slot machines in Nevada, the largest U.S. gaming market, by August.

Aristocrat wants to compete with slot industry giants like International Game Technology of Reno and Alliance Gaming Corp. of Las Vegas, which makes Bally slot machines.

Aristocrat, the largest slot maker in Australia, is beefing up its U.S. sales force and analysts expect it will do well in the United States.

"If they can offer product to any market they'll at least get a 15 percent share," said Sean Monaghen, analyst at Burdett Buckeridge Young Ltd. in Sydney. "They do make a product that is better than anybody else."
