Letter: Right idea, but wrong solution
Thursday, June 29, 2000 | 9:31 a.m.
Worker abuse is inherent in illegal immigration. What O'Callaghan sees in the Las Vegas construction industry is repeated all over the country in pig factories, slaughterhouses, tobacco farms, brothels and restaurants.
Labor supply and demand are the only elements that will effectively improve worker wages and treatment. While it will enhance the leftist, globalist agenda of top AFL/CIO management and the religious left, another mass shamnesty and relaxation of border enforcement will only mean more workers chasing fewer jobs.
What we need is a government-supervised guest worker program that offers screened workers in a category between green card holder and illegal immigrant.
It can be done; it has to be done. The construction industry and pork barons are not going to pay for the extra schools and social services these illegal immigrants require.
