Bail set in death of disabled relative
A 68-year-old Las Vegas man accused of beating his severely disabled sister-in-law to death and freezing her body will be allowed to post bail.
Wilman Oslund has been held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center since August in connection with the death of Sheila Manantan.
On Wednesday District Judge John McGroarty set Oslund's bail at $75,000 and said if he is able to make bail, he will be placed on intensive probation.
According to authorities, Oslund's wife, Charity, took care of Manantan, her sister, for most of her sister's life. After Charity died in November 1997, Oslund was left to care for the mentally disabled woman, who also suffered from cerebral palsy.
Police believe Oslund beat and stomped Manantan to death, then stuffed her into a freezer before thawing her out several days later.
Oslund and his second wife, Sherry Kahalehoe were charged in August with second-degree murder, but Kahalehoe later agreed to testify against Oslund in exchange for the charges being dismissed against her.
Kahalehoe has since died of a drug overdose.
Las Vegas man gets 86 years
A Las Vegas man was sentenced to 86 years in prison Wednesday for his part in a carjacking that resulted in the deaths of two men.
Randy Dean Goodrick, 20, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. He will have to serve at least 32 1/2 years before being released from prison.
Court records show Goodrick and Jeremy Butler stole a BMW from a Summerlin resident Aug. 13. The owner of the car managed to take their shotgun away and fired twice at them as they drove off.
Butler, 20, was killed when the stolen car raced through a red light at 80 mph and hit a motorcycle driven by Philip Gastineau, who also was killed.
Goodrick, who was shot in the leg, was arrested at the hospital.
Trial set in beating death
A January trial date has been set for a Las Vegas man accused of beating an elderly woman to death in December.
District Judge Mark Gibbons set Anthony Dotson's Jan. 8 trial date Wednesday during Dotson's arraignment on burglary, kidnapping, robbery, battery and murder charges.
Dotson is accused of bludgeoning Doris Bair, 79, to death in her Bracken Avenue home and robbing Kathryn Waldman, 87, a few days later.
Bair's body was found by police after neighbors called to report they hadn't seen her in some time.
