CAP color guard takes title
Thursday, June 29, 2000 | 9:14 a.m.
Members of the Nellis Squadron of the Nevada Civil Air Patrol received public recognition of their significant accomplishments when they were asked to present the colors during the opening ceremonies at a June 9 Las Vegas Stars baseball game.
In May color guard Commander Sean Raquepo and his team -- Jessica Alpiche, Kevin Ashhurst and David Gallego of Rancho High School and Daryl Alpiche of K.O. Knudson Middle School -- won the Pacific Region Civil Air Patrol color guard competition in Reno. The cadets had won the Southern Nevada competition in April to earn the right to compete at the Pacific Region.
Competing against other teams from Nevada, Washington state, Alaska, Oregon, California and Hawaii, the Las Vegas youths marched away with the championship. Because no national championship will be held in 2000, they achieved all that they could by taking the Pacific Region honors.
To win the competition the team took three of the five events -- written exams, physical fitness tests, drill and ceremonies and indoor and outdoor flag presentations. Raquepo additionally distinguished himself as the best color guard commander.
Nellis sergeant honored
Nellis Tech Sgt. Glenn Noehl, a member of the 57th Aircraft Generation Squadron, was recently named Nellis American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year. According to Red Cross officials, Noehl has volunteered his time at local, state and national levels for more than 16 years. The sergeant volunteers an average of 30 hours a month for the humanitarian organization. He teaches cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid and developed a Red Cross Jeopardy game to motivate and train new volunteers.
Noehl is currently on the Clark County Red Cross chapter's Education Services Committee and has served for three years as chairman of the Nevada State Service Council.
