Columnist Peter Benton: Southern Nevada women win Silver Cup

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
Last week at the Reflection Bay course, 20 ladies representing the Southern Nevada Womens Golf Association teed it up against their northern Nevada counterparts and were successful in winning the annual Silver Cup competition.
This event, which is modelled after the Ryder Cup, saw the local team win the first day's alternate shot format, 7 1/2- 1/2 points.
In the second day of play (best ball of twosome), the northerners roared back, winning six points to our representative's two points. However, on the final day Southern Nevada's superior depth proved too much for its competitors, and Southern Nevada won the singles matches 10 1/2 points to 5 1/2, thus winning the tournament by a 20-12 margin.
Next year, the Silver Cup Competition will be played in Reno.
Congratulations to the victorious ladies who represented the Southern team: Sylvia Bergmen, Rita Byorick, Sherry Corsello, Sue DeFrancesco, Pam Downey, Laurie Durant, Doe Emes, Paula Fischer, Irene Frank, Devary Howe, Sherry Jackson, Brenda Knott, Barbara Manney, Tami Martinson, Sue May, Mary McFarland, Kay Medrano, Rene Raynes, Camille Smith, Barb Christiansen and captain Julie Skinner.
The tournament was played at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club and Graham earned $40,000 from the $236,200 purse.
Their score of 57 edged the pairing of Brent Bell and Larry Bross, who placed second at 58.
Sharing third with 59s were the teams of Marley Werner/Paul Roach, Bill Manning/Rod Conant and Steve and Tylor Neilsen.
You may not believe it, but his infraction was he wore metal-spiked golf shoes, which are banned from the Knollwood Club and which golfers had been prohibited from wearing during the qualifying.
It did not matter too much as Weibring, who shot 146, missed the cut by two shots anyway.
