Chain’s profit improves

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Walgreen Co., the nation's largest drug store chain, on Monday reported a 21.5 percent increase in quarterly earnings due to a sharp increase in prescription sales.
Earnings for Walgreen's fiscal third quarter ending May 31 totaled $193.6 million, or 19 cents per share, compared to $159.3 million, or 16 cents per share during the same period in 1999.
