Washoe County considers buying Red Hill
Monday, June 26, 2000 | 4:28 a.m.
Commissioner Pete Sferrazza wants the county to make a deal with the American Land Conservancy for the 469-acre Red Hill area just north of Truckee Meadows Community College.
"It's one of the few open, public areas left in my district," he said.
The conservancy holds an option to buy the Bureau of Land Management land. It wants $1.1 million for the site, which includes 359 acres kept under a conservation easement to protect sensitive plants and trees.
The 110 acres not part of that easement are on the east side of the hills near residential development in Panther Valley.
Sferrazza said part of that land could be kept as a park and the rest sold to developers to pay off the land purchase.
