Church sued over payment for home

A Las Vegas church is being sued for breach of contract over a property dispute.
According to the lawsuit filed Thursday in District Court, officials with St. Stephen's Church agreed to buy a home in the 2400 block of Windjammer Way from Sound Comfort Inc. on March 22.
On that date, the church gave Sound Comfort $1,000 cash and a $1,900 check and agreed to pay $329,000 for the home by June 1, the lawsuit states. The church, however, stopped payment on the check and failed to make any payments by June 1.
James Kohl, who represents Sound Comfort, said no one from the church has responded to letters sent to them. He also said they have refused to surrender the house.
Kohl said he represents another property owner that has taken steps in recent months to evict the church for nonpayment.
Las Vegas attorney Barry Levinson, representing the church, did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.
"There was a contract for the sale of the house and they failed to live up to the terms," Kohl said. "In my opinion, you have to pay for where you live. You have to pay or you have to leave."
