Suspect indicted in series of bank robberies
Thursday, June 22, 2000 | 11:33 a.m.
A man indicted in March in connection with one bank robbery has been indicted by a federal grand jury on another 21 counts.
Authorities believe Jeffrey Alan James, 34, robbed 22 Las Vegas and Henderson banks between July 9, 1999, and Feb. 26, 2000, getting away with $279 to $8,000 at a time for a total of almost $78,000.
James was initially indicted after special agents with the Salt Lake City FBI office told Las Vegas-based FBI agents they believed James was connected with the Las Vegas bank robberies and two others in Utah.
In all the robberies a man usually entered the bank dressed in a suit and tie or a T-shirt, and always wearing a baseball cap. His hats included everything from a black and white camouflage hat to a hat with "DEA" (Drug Enforcement Agency) printed on it.
The following are the banks listed in the indictment as those hit by James: Nevada State Bank, 232 N. Jones Blvd.; Silver State Bank, 170 S. Rainbow Blvd.; Community Bank of Nevada, 1400 S. Rainbow; U.S. Bank, 1421 N. Jones; Nevada State Bank, 2385 Windmill Lane; Nevada State Bank, 6130 W. Tropicana Ave.; Bank of America, 4854 W. Lone Mountain Road; Nevada State Bank, 8555 W.
