Columnist Peter Benton: LVCC wins challenge

Thursday, June 22, 2000 | 10:22 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears weekly.

The third Interclub Challenge of the season, this one hosted by Las Vegas Country Club, saw the host course team win with a combined score of 260.

The unusual format featured a modified stableford.

Las Vegas Country Club (260 points) was followed by Spanish Trail, 249; TPC at Summerlin, 242; Canyon Gate, 237; Southshore Golf Club, 237; Red Rock, 230; and The Anthem, 228.

LVCC's John Creaney was low pro with 37 points.

Durant, tied with Paula Fischer after regulation play, won the ensuing playoff on the first hole to capture her first local "major."

Third at 171 was Nicole Tassone, with Sherry Jackson, Pauline May and Patty Wright tying for fourth with 172s.

Joyce Galane won low net with a 143. She was followed by Marcia Gallagher and Jeannine Hudgins at 144.

Exactly 50 years.

On June 10, 1950, Ben Hogan earned his second of four U.S. Open titles at the Merion Cricket Club in Philadelphia, taking home $4,000 from the $10,000 purse.

That's a far cry from the $800,000 (of the $4.5 mil. purse) won this past weekend by Tiger Woods at the 100th U.S. Open. Woods' winnings for the year already total a staggering $4,949,731.

Incidentally, Hogan won a three-man playoff over Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio. The threesome completed play at 287; Hogan shot 69 in the 18-hole playoff to 73 for Mangrum and 75 for Fazio.
