Robbery suspect nabbed at UNLV
Metro Police chased down and arrested a bank robbery suspect inside UNLV's Moyer Student Union Tuesday afternoon.
At about 3 p.m. a man entered a Bank of America at 4795 S. Maryland Parkway with what appeared to be a small handgun and demanded money, FBI spokesman Joseph Dickey said.
Police arrived at the scene and after a short foot pursuit arrested Thomas Peter Logan, 40, of Vancouver, British Columbia, at the student union. An undisclosed amount of money and a BB pistol were recovered from Logan, Dickey said.
Authorities do not believe that the man attends classes at the university, and was only trying to lose police on the campus' grounds, Dickey said.
Logan is also a suspect in two other robberies that occurred at the Bank of America branch located at 300 S. Fourth St, Dickey said. One happened in April 1998 and the other was about two months ago, and in both cases the suspect used what looked like a small handgun.
Logan was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, and he will go before a U.S. magistrate later this week to be formally charged with the robberies.
Filing period set for justice of peace
There will be a special filing period for Henderson Justice of the Peace from July 17 to July 31.
The filing will be at the Clark County Election Department for candidates to get on the November ballot to fill the remaining term of Kent Dawson. Dawson, who was to serve until 2002, is awaiting final confirmation for a U.S. District Court judgeship.
To be eligible to file for this position, candidates must have a high school diploma, be a licenced attorney admitted to the Nevada Bar and not have been removed or retired from any office by the bar.
Six nominated to legislative panel
CARSON CITY -- Six persons, five of them from Las Vegas, have been nominated by the Legislative Commission to serve on the Nevada Commission on Nuclear Projects.
Gov. Kenny Guinn will select two of the six to fill the vacancies on the commission that monitors the work by the U. S. Department of Energy at Yucca Mountain.
The legislative commission, meeting in Carson City Tuesday, submitted the names of Steve Hill, Paul Workman and Jess Bradley, all of Las Vegas, for one of the open slots. It nominated Jim Rogers and Tom Warden, both of Las Vegas and former Secretary of State Cheryl Lau of Carson City for the other post.
Committees formed to find president
Two committees have been formed to begin a search for the new president of UNR.
University Regent Chairwoman Jill Derby said the Regents' Presidential Search Committee and the Institutional Advisory Committee will work in tandem to organize a framework for the search and develop a leadership profile for the new president.
The institutional committee will make a recommendation to the Regents committee, which will make a recommendation to the full Regents board.
Joe Crowley, who has lead UNR for 22 years, plans to retire Dec. 31 from his post and return to teaching. However, a new president is not expected to come on board until July 1, 2001.
