'I Can Cope' classes at Greenspun center

The American Cancer Society is offering "I Can Cope," a series of free classes about cancer, 6-8 p.m. beginning July 12 at the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite 330.

"I Can Cope" will help patients make informed decisions with their doctors regarding treatment.

$1.5 million grant given for education

A $1.5 million grant aimed at educating seniors and caregivers about diabetes was announced this week by PacifiCare Health Systems.

The grant is the largest ever received by the American Diabetes Association and the largest ever given by PacifiCare.

PacifiCare is part of a five-year national research program with UCLA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to assess diabetes treatment and develop new interventions.

The CDC says 824 Nevadans died in 1997 with diabetes as a underlying or contributing cause.

Annual telethon raises $511,038

University Medical Center's Children's Miracle Network raised $511,038 this month at the annual Children's Miracle Network Telethon, which aired on KVVU Channel 5.

The money will stay in Nevada to purchase pediatric medical equipment.

Carpenters hammer out $33,000 in funds

The Nevada Carpenters Union raised more than $33,000 for the National Kidney Foundation of Nevada during its second annual Carpenters for Kidneys Hard Hat Drive in May.

Through volunteer efforts union members collected donations May 13 at more than 25 intersections.

All funds raised will stay in Nevada to support the Patient Services Program designed to ensure needed kidney transplants and aid patients who need financial assistance with their medical costs, such as medications and dialysis.

The American Lung Association of Nevada

is sponsoring Camp Superkids, a camp for children with asthma, to be held Aug. 4-6. Interested parents may call 431-6333. Space is limited.

Immunizations: Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open June 21-28:
