A Las Vegas man who beat his roommate to death at a mental health group home two years ago was sentenced to life in prison with parole possible after 10 years.
Anthony Gallego, 21, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the November 1997 death of Richard Daniel Moore, 36, and was sentenced Friday by District Judge Mark Gibbons.
Deputy District Attorney Christopher Lalli said Gibbons agreed that Gallego is mentally ill after receiving a psychiatric report. By declaring Gallego mentally ill, Gibbons ensured that Gallego will receive mental health help while in prison.
Gallego and Moore were roommates at the group home at 4424 E. Bonanza Road when Gallego kicked and struck Moore repeatedly in the head, causing him to suffer a fractured skull and broken jaw.
Gallego was identified as a suspect when he couldn't be found after the incident and he was arrested the next day near Torrey Pines Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard.
Gallego was represented by Deputy Special Public Defender Joe Sciscento.
