New police chief hired for CCSD
A new chief for the Clark County School District's police force was named Thursday by the School Board.
Elliott C. Phelps, who currently serves as the Elizabeth City, N.C., police chief, will earn $70,860 at the school district. His start date has not yet been determined.
Phelps has been chief in Elizabeth City since August 1998, having served many years on the force previously as a captain. Before going to Elizabeth City, Phelps was employed by the city of Aurora, Colo., working through the ranks as patrol officer, detective, lieutenant and patrol commander.
Record power usage recorded
On the hottest day of the year so far, Nevada Power Co. set a new record peak for power demanded by customers at 5 p.m. Thursday, two weeks earlier than a year ago.
Last year's system peak occurred on July 1 with a record 3,993 megawatts, Nevada Power spokeswoman Sonya Headen said. This year the record was 4,434 megawatts as the temperature reached 111 degrees.
Nevada Power has planned for supplying its 518,415 customers with plenty of power this summer, Headen said.
Each year the company's customers demand more electricity. In 1994, the peak demand was 2,851 megawatts for 403,000 customers.
