Letter: NRA, NCAA deserve ban, not legalized betting

Thursday, June 15, 2000 | 9:36 a.m.

I read your article in Sunday's paper, "Pros fire potshots at collegiate betting bill." David Crane, a staff member of Sen. McCain says, "Should we have legalized betting on kids?" Sounds like he is from another planet. Men are drafted at 18, not kids.

As a young man I worked my way through college working for a bookmaker. He was a great guy and an asset to the community, but the odds were always on his side as the betting public was always in the dark.

I don't gamble on college sports, but like abortion, which I am against, I feel the choice is up to the individual. It amazes me that John McCain calls himself a Republican. Aren't they supposed to want government out of our lives?

The NRA and NCAA are both cut out of the same cloth. The devil with you, but hurrah for me.

We would all be better off without these two organizations. What person in their right mind would defend the right of anyone to own an Uzi or assault rifle?
