Saturday night is back in Hot August Nights festivities

Wednesday, June 14, 2000 | 12:01 p.m.

The annual tribute to classic cars and rock 'n' roll was cut back last year in an attempt to avoid a repeat of a 1998 melee that led to the arrest of more than 200 people.

But the shortened schedule took a bite out of attendance and tourism dollars.

This year, the event will run for a full week, July 31 through Aug. 6. Festivities will conclude that Sunday with a parade through downtown.

No outdoor consumption of alcohol will be permitted except in designated areas like beer gardens.

Hot August Nights is Reno's largest special event. Officials estimate it attracts up to 200,000 visitors and generates $116 million for the local economy.
