Mohave County Sheriff’s officials foil alleged jail break

Tuesday, June 13, 2000 | 11:13 a.m.

Authorities last week received a tip that someone was going to try to free David Goldberg, a suspect in a drug lab case, said Mohave County sheriff's spokesman Steve Johnson.

Goldberg was to appear Monday in court, which meant he would be escorted from the county jail across the street to the courthouse. The hearing was moved when authorities learned of the plot, Johnson said.

About 25 officers from the sheriff's office, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Public Safety and the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team assisted by two helicopters then staked out the area around the jail and the suspect's Cedar Hills residence.

Before noon, detectives stopped a mini-van after it made a U-turn and was heading back towards the jail.

Johnson said two suspects were taken into custody from the mini-van and detectives found two handguns. Four other suspect vehicles were stopped on Andy Devine Avenue and Oak Street. Investigators are continuing to catalog items found inside those vehicles, including $10,000 in cash, clothes, food, rubber gloves and a pair of bolt cutters.

While no charges had been filed Monday night, the investigation was still underway with officers executing search warrants in Mohave County and Nevada, Johnson said.

Goldberg and another man allegedly were operating a drug lab when they were arrested in February.
