Voters to determine bond sale for new justice center

Sunday, June 11, 2000 | 10:16 a.m.

The Washoe County Debt Management Commission voted 6-1 Friday to place the project on the ballot.

"We have a big public education campaign ahead of us," said Washoe District Judge James Hardesty, who's leading the drive for the project on behalf of his colleagues.

Hardesty acknowledged the price tag is steep, but said the investment makes more sense than repairing the current downtown courthouse and leasing office space.

He said he already has lined up former Washoe District Judge Mills Lane and former Washoe County Sheriff Richard Kirkland to help promote it.

The Washoe County Commission on June 20 will consider buying the northern two-thirds of the Pioneer casino block for about $13.2 million for the courthouse.
