Licensing, zoning provisions adjusted

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday adopted a bill adjusting licensing and zoning provisions for which the city has been sued.
The amendment is the second attempt in a year to address problems arising from a case at the 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals that has ruled twice against the city.
According to the bill, introduced by City Attorney Bradford Jerbic, the city will wait until the court orders otherwise or issues a dispositive ruling before it suspends or revokes the license of a business protected by the First Amendment.
The court has ruled the city did not provide quick judicial ruling when the applicant, an adult video store, appealed a denial for a business license.
Hot Stuff, which opened on West Charleston Boulevard in March 1997, was later audited and found in violation of the city's zoning code because half the stock it carried was sexually oriented material. The store was closed down twice.
