Law school closer to accreditation

Thursday, June 8, 2000 | 11:48 a.m.

The UNLV Boyd Law School has advanced another step toward provisional accreditation.

With accreditation by the American Bar Association, the school's graduates can take the bar exam, which must be passed before they can practice law.

"We received a letter today from the council of the section of legal accreditation approving provisional accreditation," Law School Dean Richard Morgan said Wednesday.

The final step in approval of provisional accreditation will be the action of the bar association's House of Delegates to either approve or reject the council's recommendation. The delegates will meet July 9 in New York.

Morgan traveled to Woodstock, Vt., Saturday for a meeting with the council where he successfully presented that Boyd has made satisfactory progress in meeting all the bar association's requirements.

Permanent accreditation can be earned in two to five years after provisional accreditation and only after full compliance with all requirements. Those requirements include that the school be located in permanent facilities at UNLV's Dickinson Library.
