Voters to decide on tax hike
Wednesday, June 7, 2000 | 11:32 a.m.
Henderson residents will have the opportunity in November to vote on a proposed 24-cent tax increase expected to put 166 more police on the street over a seven-year period.
City officials say the tax would add 237 new public safety employees within seven years. That number would include 166 police officers, 30 firefighters and paramedics and 41 support staff.
The agenda item was approved quickly with little discussion.
After the meeting Mayor James B. Gibson said the additional tax money would be put to good use.
"We have an unassailable track record of doing exactly what we tell our voters we're going to do," Gibson said.
The proposed tax hike would increase the current 23-cent public safety tax approved in 1998 to 47 cents per $100 property valuation.
For the owner of a home valued at $100,000 the 24-cent hike would mean an additional $84 per year in property tax.
