Fire season to open on Friday

CARSON CITY -- State Forester Roy Trenoweth declared today Nevada's wildland fire season opens Friday and there's a potential for explosive blazes this summer comparable to last year.
Trenoweth said conditions in the southern and western portions of the state are already "in a burning condition status."
Last year more than 1.8 million acres were blackened. "We're facing the potential of another fire season marked by explosive and rapid spread of wildland fires through the grasses, light vegetation and layers of dead vegetation debris from previous years," Trenoweth said.
His agency has jurisdiction over state and private lands in eight counties including part of Clark County. He said homeowners should clear dead and dying vegetation away from homes and other structures to protect them from wildland fires and help provide a safe area in which firefighters can work to save homes.
