Letter: Put lake fee to good use
Monday, June 5, 2000 | 8:30 a.m.
I first visited Lake Mead in 1982. Among the beauty was trash and broken bottles along the beaches. Today the scene is similar. Only now, many have decided that Lake Mead is a great place to dispose of used diapers, old mattresses, etc. It is sad to think that we share this lake with so many undeserving visitors.
Contrary to Mr. Friddell, I believe the entrance fee is a good idea, and I am happy to pay it. That is, providing that the money is put to some good use. Hopefully we will see enforcement of current litter laws and some improvements as they have already done with the new lake shore drive.
It would also be nice to see improved beaches, campgrounds and fishing. It might be constructive to educate the ignorant of the environmental impact that occurs from misuse and abuse of this National Recreation area.
The user fees are fair. If one can't afford $20 a year for unlimited visits, I suggest you stay on the couch and leave the lake to those who can appreciate the value.
