5,400 acres scheduled for annexation

Monday, June 5, 2000 | 10:54 a.m.

More than a year after striking an interlocal agreement with Clark County officials to absorb land at its southwest border, the Henderson City Council is ready to conduct its largest annexation in 29 years.

"We have been seeking the participation of the landowners for some time," said John Rinaldi, the city's properties manager. "We just decided to go ahead with it."

The city is expected Tuesday to annex 5,400 acres of unincorporated Clark County land -- or about 8.5 square miles.

The addition of the land south of Lake Mead Drive west of Henderson city limits would represent the largest annexation since 1971, when the city annexed an 8-mile stretch that is now eastern Henderson, Rinaldi said.

The city wants to establish an "western gateway" to the city in the proposed area.

In its 1999 interlocal agreement with Clark County, which helps steer development of the property, the city of Henderson was to annex more than 6,000 acres, including a parcel owned by the Bureau of Land Management southwest of Del Webb's Anthem development and almost 1,400 acres in the Enterprise Township area.

But not all of the property owners were swayed to join the city during a series of public meetings on the proposal, reducing the total package that may be annexed to 5,416 acres.

But the city will continue to visit with the dissenting county residents in the hopes of gaining the remaining 804 acres in the future, Rinaldi said.
