Ground broken for $250 million Village at Squaw Valley
Sunday, June 4, 2000 | 8:40 a.m.
The Village at Squaw Valley USA, being developed by Intrawest Corp., will feature 589 condominium units above 78 businesses, including shops, clubs and restaurants.
The four-phase project will begin with First Ascent, 139 condominiums and 16 shops and restaurants scheduled for occupancy in December 2001.
The condo units sold in April in six hours at prices ranging from $300,000 to $1.3 million.
"A great mountain deserves a great village," Nancy Wendt, president of Squaw Valley Ski Corp., told a group gathered on the ski resort's parking lot. The project will cover 13 acres of the lot.
Intrawest's village will complement the ski operations run separately by Squaw Valley Ski Corp. - a package that officials say will bring the resort up to true destination status.
Intrawest, which operates resort developments across North America, began talks with Squaw in 1994 and signed an agreement in 1996.
Construction of the entire village is targeted for completion by 2005 or 2006.
