Police identify shooting victim
A Las Vegas woman found shot to death in her home in the 5100 block of Danica Way about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday has been identified as 47-year-old Louise M. Hadfield.
Neighbors had not seen the woman for several days when they entered the house and found her body, police said.
Anyone with information on the slaying is asked to contact Metro's homicide unit at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
Woman dies in two-vehicle crash
A 39-year-old Las Vegas woman was killed Thursday night in a two-vehicle accident.
The woman was driving southbound on the Pecos-McLeod interconnect at Emerson Avenue about 11:10 p.m. when she apparently failed to yield the right away and was stuck by a minivan driven by 23-year-old Heather Lacasse, Metro Police said.
The 39-year-old woman died at the scene. Her name was not released this morning pending family notification. Lacasse was treated at Desert Springs Hospital and released, police said.
Strangling suspect is from California
Metro Police have identified a parole violator from California as a man arrested Wednesday in Las Vegas on charges of murder and robbery in connection with the killing of a Kentucky man found dead in his hotel room Monday.
Val Stallworth, 46, a convicted felon in California and Nevada, was arrested Wednesday along with Jaime Kay Shuey, 23, as they left a pawn shop near Las Vegas Blvd. North and Carey Avenue.
Both have been charged with the murder of Stephen Nally, 42, who was found dead in his room at the Stratosphere hotel-casino after he failed to check out Monday.
Group rates Nevada lawmakers
Public Interest Research Groups on Thursday released their rankings of members of Congress based on environmental and consumer advocacy. Nevada's members got mixed reviews: Sen. Richard Bryan earned an 80 score; Sen. Harry Reid, a 67; Rep. Shelley Berkley, a 65; Rep. Jim Gibbons, a 15.
Senators were ranked based on whether they voted in the interest of the public on 15 issues ranging from nuclear waste and mining waste to health care reform and taxpayer protection. House members were graded on 20 similar votes.
District judge to retire
District Judge Mike Fondi, the third senior judge in Nevada, will retire Aug. 12 after 22 years in his district composed of Carson City and Storey County
Fondi, 63, said Thursday he's not sure if he will take senior status, allowing him to be called in to sit on cases.
During his career, he has presided over a number of death-penalty cases, handled a high-profile bribery case involving a state legislator in the 1970s and ruled on the removal of a state Public Service Commissioner.
After graduating from Stanford School of Law, Fondi went to work as a legal advisor for Gov. Grant Sawyer in 1963. He later worked for the Carson City district attorney's office and then became district attorney. He was named district judge July 1, 1977, by Gov. Mike O'Callaghan when a second judge was created in the First Judicial District.
Forum to examine security issues
A Senior Forum, featuring panelists and more than 40 exhibitors, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.
Panel topics are "Senior Safety and Security," moderated by Carla Sloan, "Neighborhood Services, Parks and Recreation and Transportation," moderated by Claudia Collins and "Social Services and Health Care," moderated by Larry Spitler.
The day will end with an open forum in which attendees will be able to address panelists on a range of topics.
Meeting to look at master plan
The Las Vegas City Council and Planning Commission will hold a special joint meeting Monday morning to discuss the city's 2020 master plan.
The meeting begins at 11 a.m. and will be held at the Cashman Field Center, Room 104, 850 Las Vegas Boulevard North.
The plan was in the works for months and included input from a committee of citizens.
