Letter: Trooper’s death grim reminder
Friday, June 2, 2000 | 9:54 a.m.
I know I should just get used to the idea that we live in a cold, heartless world these days, and that no matter how much I would like to see it all change, people in these times are self-directed and care very little about other human beings.
Nothing could show more proof of that than when the Michigan state trooper was killed crossing the highway last week.
One person -- out of several cars that hit her, drug her and ran over her -- was decent enough to stop. Forget the law that mandates you stop for accidents, this was a decent human being who for 14 years put her life on the line for the state of Michigan, and people rode over her like a piece of wind-blown garbage.
I can't believe that anyone could have hit this woman or witnessed it and not know it was a person. I have hit beer cans in the rode and known I hit something. I'd like to think there are a few consciences out there right now reeling in guilt, but then again ... this is the world we live in today.
