West Virginia video lottery generates record revenue for fourth consecutive month

Thursday, June 1, 2000 | 11 a.m.

In April, 4,546 video lottery machines at the two horse tracks and two greyhound track pulled in $29.1 million, Virgil Helton, deputy lottery director, said Wednesday.

The total includes revenue from 1,823 recently installed coin-drop machines, which pay players in cash rather than printing out winnings on paper tickets.

Mountaineer Park near Chester in Hancock County is seeking approval to install another 550 machines. The commission is expected to consider the proposal at its July meeting.

Video lottery's April revenue was more than twice that of instant and online games, which generated $14.2 million, and 66 percent higher than the same period last year.

Marketing director Libby White attributed the increase to the addition of coin-drop machines and another 1,000 regular machines.

The growing popularity of video lottery has made it the Lottery Commission's top money maker. Total revenue from all games was $363.12 million for the fiscal year that ends June 30, with $224.36 million generated by video lottery.
