Editorial: Crowley’s steady hand is legacy

Thursday, June 1, 2000 | 9:49 a.m.

University presidents nowadays come and go almost as quickly as managers of professional sports teams. It is considered surprising then if a university president lasts even 10 years with one institution, which makes it all the more remarkable that Joe Crowley has been president of the University of Nevada, Reno for 22 years. On Wednesday, though, the 67-year-old Crowley announced he would step down as president and return to teaching.

Crowley did a superb job of leading the university during a period of phenomenal growth, one in which a great number of Las Vegas residents graduated from UNR. The university president also was a gentleman at a time when such qualities often are in short supply, especially when cut-throat politics in the Legislature have tried to foment regional funding disputes between UNLV and UNR. Crowley's level-headed demeanor will be missed.
