Deadline passes for machine license renewal in South Carolina
Thursday, June 1, 2000 | 9:44 a.m.
The state Revenue Department, which regulates the industry, had approved 9,537 new licenses of the 22,535 licenses that expired, said spokesman Danny Brazell.
The agency will continue to process all applications received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, he said. A final count on new licenses would not be available for several days, he said.
Machine owners with expired licenses had to pay $4,000 for a new one. Licenses normally are good for two years, but with the ban, they would be good for only a month.
The ban took effect last year when the state Supreme Court overturned a November referendum that would have let voters decide whether to keep the games legal. The court upheld the ban.
The industry filed a last-ditch lawsuit last week in Circuit Court, claiming the ban on the games unconstitutionally takes video gambling owners' property and denies them equal protection.
Attorney General Charlie Condon has asked the state Supreme Court to hear the suit, but the court has not decided.
