Slumping Stars fall to Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake Buzz took the fifth Thursday night at Franklin Covey Field -- and that was more than enough to hand the slumping Las Vegas Stars another loss.

John Barnes led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left-center off Las Vegas starter Rodrigo Lopez to ignite a six-run inning for the Buzz (64-41) who then went on to cruise an easy 9-5 victory.

It was 10th time in 13 meetings this season that Salt Lake, owner of the best record in the Pacific Coast League this year, has defeated the Stars (54-48).

Rightfielder Brian Buchanan added a two-run single and designated hitter Javier Valentin smashed a two-run triple off reliever Domingo Guzman to highlight the rally.

Valentin also homered in the contest and finished with four RBIs.

David Newhan led Las Vegas with three hits and two RBIs.

The teams continue their five-game series with a doubleheader this afternoon beginning at 4.

* STARS NOTES: Pitcher Mike Saipe's stay in Las Vegas was a short one. Signed as a free agent by the Stars after getting released by Colorado two weeks ago, Saipe was released by Las Vegas on Thursday. ... Stars fans shouldn't hold their breath about a Ben Davis return this weekend. Padres starting catcher Carlos Hernandez, who has been on the disabled list since July 5 with a lower back strain, expects to be traded over the weekend after he is activated. If so, Davis would likely stay in San Diego despite his .125 average.
