Stars squander lead against Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY -- For a while Wednesday night, it looked as if it was going to be the Nate Tebbs Show at Franklin Covey Field.

The Las Vegas Stars designated hitter, who grew up in the Salt Lake City area and had about 50 friends and family in the stands, homered, singled twice and drove in two runs, staking the Stars to an early 6-1 lead.

But the Buzz (63-41) then showed why it has the best record in the Pacific Coast League this year.

Catcher A.J. Pierzynski and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz each homered and third baseman Casey Blake broke an 11-11 tie in the eighth inning with an RBI single off Las Vegas closer Brandon Kolb as the Buzz rallied for a 12-11 win.

It was the ninth victory in 12 games against the Stars (54-47) for Salt Lake.

The teams resume their five-game series tonight. The game will be televised locally by Cox Cable.
