Anti-tobacco caravan targets teenagers

CARSON CITY -- An anti-tobacco caravan on a nationwide tour and led by teenagers will be in Las Vegas Friday and Saturday to spread the message to get youngsters to stop smoking.

Called the "Truth Tour," the group is visiting 27 cities giving training sessions and talks on how tobacco companies have targeted teens through magazine advertising.

The vans on the tour are loaded with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment including Internet hook-ups, turntables and CD burners, and sound systems. They will arrive at Cashman Center Friday.

One van will be parked Saturday at the Boulevard mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Another will be at Planet Plywood Skate Park (4837 Lincoln Road in North Las Vegas); Mountasia Family Fun Park (2050 Olympic Ave. in Henderson); North Las Vegas Recreation Center (1638 N. Bruce St. in North Las Vegas); Sunset Lanes (4565 E. Sunset Blvd. in Henderson) and at Scandia (32900 Cyrus Street in Las Vegas).

Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Wednesday that 90 percent of smokers begin using tobacco before age 19. The caravan, she said "will be a fun and informative way for teens to get the message that smoking is harmful to their health."
