Letter: Las Vegas wrong to kill pigeons
Tuesday, July 25, 2000 | 10:02 a.m.
I have been to Las Vegas, as have most of my friends, and none of us have ever noticed that pigeons, or pigeon droppings, were a problem. Litter is, in many areas of your city, a much bigger problem. Imagine Trafalgar Square in London without pigeons! They are a great tourist attraction.
In Victoria, British Columbia, we also have lots of these pleasant little birds. Specially strung thin wires are placed along areas where bird roosting is discouraged. They keep the area bird-free without causing any harm to the creatures.
Tourists, old folks and kids all love to watch and feed the birds, and their gentle cooing is a wonderful counterpoint to the sound of traffic. They bring a little bit of nature into the city.
A city that would undertake such an unnecessary and obnoxious extermination program is not a place I care to visit again.
