James E. Rogers, who has pledged nearly $209 million to colleges in Nevada and throughout the nation, has been named by Time Magazine as one of the top 12 private philanthropists in the United States.
Rogers, who owns Sunbelt Communications based in Las Vegas, Nev., has pledged or given the funds to UNLV, the University of Nevada, Reno; Idaho State University; University of Arizona; Washington University Law School in St. Louis; Carroll College in Helena, Mont., and New York University Law School.
He ranked twelfth on the list that was topped by Microsoft's co-founders Bill and Melinda Gates, who have given or pledged $22 billion. The information appears in the July 24 issue of the magazine.
"There is simply no feeling like the feeling you get when you help others," Rogers said. "Our family has chosen to use its money to support education, which we believe is the best investment anyone can make."
Sunbelt owns NBC affiliate television stations in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko; Pocatello, Idaho; Yuma, Ariz.; El Centro, Calif.; Helena, Mont.; and Jackson, Wyo., and the Fox affiliate in Twin Falls, Idaho.
