Washoe District Judge Connie Steinheimer's sentence guarantees Jorge Trujillo will spend at least 15 years in prison before he can be considered for parole.
Several NHP officers sat in the courtroom gallery on Friday to show support for Scott Swain, who still is recuperating from the wound and said he may never completely heal.
Trujillo, a Mexican national, said through an interpreter that he apologized to everybody, especially Officer Swain and his family.
Trujillo pleaded guilty to attempted murder and attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon.
Swain tried to stop Trujillo last August on a routine traffic matter and Trujillo tried to elude him.
When Trujillo finally stopped his vehicle, he jumped out and fired six shots at the trooper, who took refuge behind a brick building. One of the bullets struck the windshield on Swain's motorcycle.
Trujillo fled and was arrested later at a friend's home.
