Second brother in court over 1996 killing

Friday, July 21, 2000 | 9:51 a.m.

The second suspect in a 3-year-old murder case appeared in District Court Thursday, two weeks after his brother was convicted in the killing.

Carlos Torres, who along with his brother, Geovanny Torres, was charged with murder in the Dec. 30, 1996, death of Alfonso Lazaro, appeared before District Judge Michael Douglas.

Authorities believe the three had a dispute going back to the days when they were all refugees at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba.

Geovanny Torres was convicted June 30 of conspiracy to commit murder, murder with use of a deadly weapon and attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon in connection with the incident.

Thursday was the first time Carlos Torres, who had been a fugitive, had appeared in court since he arrived back in Nevada.
