Letter: Cigar ads should be banned, too
Friday, July 21, 2000 | 10:53 a.m.
I was recently watching television and viewed a lengthy commercial for cigars.
The ads depicted several people smoking on television, without any warning messages about the negative effects of smoking. I am shocked that after 20-plus years that cigarette advertising has been banned from television, cigars are exhibited with such glamour.
I think the federal, state and city leaders and local media should ban this type of advertising. It has already been proven that thousands of people have died, and millions have developed all sorts of medical problems from effects of tobacco.
A cigarette ... a cigar... both should have the same media restrictions and not be advertised to appeal to young people.
