Variety of programs for all ages offered

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services is offering the following programs:

Alphabet Basics: A workshop scheduled 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 27 at the Molasky Community School, 7801 W. Gilmore Ave., is designed to help a child learn the alphabet in a fun and friendly environment. Series No. 3 will be covering the letters G, H and I. Call 229-5345 and sign up.

Seed-Tech Computer Lab: The West Community Center invites the entire community to join the computer age 2:15-4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday at West Middle School and from 4:15-6:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday at West Community Center. The new Seed-Tech Computer Lab is now open to the public. Parents, grandparents and students are invited to check out the educational programs or surf the Internet for free. Community Garden Project: Join the Doolittle Senior Center crew daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1901 N. J St., for work in the garden. Get healthy with exercise and fresh air and watch the garden produce vegetables, flowers and fruits. Call 229-6125 for more information or just stop by and lend a hand.

Costume Jewelry Repair: Learn useful techniques in repairing and creating your own jewelry 4-5 p.m. Tuesday at the Las Vegas Senior Citizens Center, 450 E. Bonanza Road. For more information, call 229-6454.

America in Action: A historical program being offered 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the Las Vegas Senior Citizens Center, 450 E. Bonanza Road, with films that begin with early settlers, the Revolutionary War and continue up to the present. Call 229-6454 for more details.

Adaptive Recreation: The Adaptive Recreation Division now offers more comprehensive inclusion services in order to efficiently serve individuals with disabilities and their families in the communities. Call 229-4903 for details.

Leisure Buddies: The Leisure Buddies program provides an opportunity for people in the community and persons with disabilities to assist one another in a variety of recreational settings such as canoeing, swimming, bowling, crafts and a number of other recreational programs offered through the city of Las Vegas. Financial planning workshop on tap

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a financial planning workshop 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 27 at the Whitney Ranch Satellite Center, 1661 Galleria Drive.

The fast-paced workshop explores six key areas of financial planning, including cash and risk management, investment, tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning.

Enrollment is $12 per person, which includes a full-color workbook. For additional information, call 450-5885.

Applications being taken by Metro

The deadline for applications for the position of corrections officer has been extended through noon on July 31, a Metro Police spokesman said.

Starting salary for the positions is $36,670, and applicants must be 21 years old or older, a U.S. citizen, have no felony or domestic violence convictions, a valid Nevada driver's license and a high school diploma or GED.
