Clark County zoning briefs for July 20, 2000

Thursday, July 20, 2000 | 10:21 a.m.

Timeshare project receives approval

A four-story, 229-unit timeshare hotel received a thumbs up from Clark County commissioners on Wednesday despite objections from residents living near the proposed project at Tropicana Avenue and Decatur Boulevard.

Residents in the adjacent subdivision, armed with a petition with about 100 signatures, spoke against the zone change from residential to general commercial. They argued that the height of the project will overshadow the adjacent subdivision and that it would bring too much new traffic into the area.

Greg Borgel, a land use consultant representing applicant Consolidated Resorts, said the project will be a high-end, luxury condominium-type timeshare, would have significant landscape buffering and it would bring less traffic into the neighborhood than other potential uses.

The project had won recommendations for approval from the Spring Valley Town Board and the Clark County Planning Commission.

Talks planned with Rhodes Ranch

The Clark County Commission voted 4-0 Wednesday to accept a status report from Rhodes Ranch on discussions over a proposed grass-lined storm channel at Durango Drive and Windmill Lane.

Rhodes Ranch is seeking to move the channel so the company can build more homes on an adjacent residential subdivision. The move could affect land owned by the county Aviation Department, complicating the discussions with questions over who would pay for that property.

The developer has argued that the move would save the county money because a large, concrete-lined channel would not be necessary. Discussions over the issue have lasted for months.

Public Works Department representatives have said the grass-lined channel, an improved concrete channel or a covered channel are all options for the developer.

Commission Chairman Bruce Woodbury gave a potential way out for the developer. His motion, supported without dissent by the full commission, said finding the best possible solution serves a "clear public purpose."

Flamingo-Caesars structure approved

A privately financed pedestrian bridge between Caesars Palace and the Flamingo Las Vegas received approval from the Clark County Commission on Wednesday.

The proposed covered bridge will be at the north end of the Flamingo property and will connect to the proposed 200-foot high, 90-foot wide Caesars Palace sign.
