Women's group honors role models

The Professional Black Women's Alliance on Sunday honored women who have achieved in all areas of life during the 15th Annual Rose Awards at the Alexis Park Resort.

"These 'community based' women are mothers, grandmothers, caretakers, church workers, volunteers, nursery school teachers and professional women in the business community. All are role models for our young people," said Lillian McMorris, president of the alliance.

This year 20 Southern Nevada women were chosen as Rose Award Role Models, and six more were selected as category recipients.

Women recognized in specific categories were Victoria Dale, academic achievements; Josephine Langford, economic and business achievements; Evelyn Fields, humanitarian; Lena Mae Turner, community achievements; Jana Gordon, outstanding student; and Florence Harris, winner of the Overall Rose Award.

Award presenters included actor Billy Dee Williams, Las Vegas Councilman Lawrence Weekly, Assemblyman Wendell Williams and District Judge Michael Douglas. Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald served as emcee, and local attorney Uri Clinton provided commentary.

Catholic Charities moves facilities

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada Senior Services now is located at the Catholic Charities Sister Mercita Weis Senior Center, 531 N. 30th St., Las Vegas, NV 89101.

The group offers programs for seniors including Meals on Wheels, senior nutrition, respite care referral, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companion Program, Senior Community Service Employment Program, Telephone Reassurance and VISTA (Volunteers in Service at America). For more information about Meals on Wheels, call 385-5284. For inquiries about all other Catholic Charities senior programs, call 382-0721.

Health care forum

Recent trends in the health care industry will be the topic of the inaugural Las Vegas Health Care Forum 6 p.m. Wednesday at Spanish Trails Country Club. Dr. Paul Leinberger, senior vice president and Western region managing director of Roper Starch Worldwide, will speak. The event if free to members of the medical community.

Immunizations

Health district immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, July 19-25:

DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EOB NORTH LAS VEGAS WIC: 5A E. Tonopah Ave., 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Wednesday.

A.D. GUY CLINIC: Boys & Girls Club, 817 N St., 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday.
