Letter: It’s not negative about getting kids to read

Sunday, July 16, 2000 | 10:28 a.m.

The real issue here, however, is that children are reading. They were lined up to purchase the latest installment of the series. They were quoted as saying that they would read this book instead of watching TV or playing video games. I cannot believe that anyone would attempt to find a negative slant to this.

Is Collins such a poor reader that all she can think of is how long it will take to finish the book? When I was 10 I read the Isaac Asimov Foundation Trilogy for the first time -- it was much longer than 752 pages. Should the fact that it is longer than "Moby Dick" have stopped me from reading it?

I did not find the new Harry Potter book unreasonably "darker" or "more corpse-strewn" than the previous ones, or one that I would not want a young child of mine to read. Is it really any "darker" than "Hansel and Gretel"? Please, let's just revel in the fact that children are reading, reading anything!
