Tribes again seek casino gaming

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Tribal leaders plan to again ask state officials to allow casino gambling as a way to spur economic development on the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Prior efforts have failed, largely because Gov. Jim Geringer has opposed expanded gaming, citing a soundly defeated 1994 state ballot initiative. That measure would have allowed casino-style gaming with a maximum of $25 bets in counties where voters approved it.

Wyoming law allows pari-mutuel wagering, bingo, raffles, calcuttas, and pull tabs, which are a form of "instant win" tickets. Most gaming is limited to charity or veterans' organizations.

The Northern Arapaho Tribe offers bingo and pull tabs at its gaming hall outside Riverton city limits in Fremont County.

Council members want to expand offerings to include casino gambling in the hall, said Anthony Addison and Ben Ridgley, co-chairmen of the Northern Arapaho Business Council.
