Theater company plans Saturday event

Nevada Theatre Company will present a free performance of "Aesop's Fables" 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mermaid Cafe and Art Gallery, 2910 Lake East Drive in the Lakes Town Center.

The play will be performed outdoors next to the cafe and is the opening event to a full day of music and art. No reservations are needed. Call 873-0191.

Henderson recreation center plans workshop

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and the Clark County Family and Youth Services Parenting Project are co-hosting a free parenting workshop called the "ABCs of Parenting" 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.

Participants successfully completing the workshop will receive certificates recognizing their achievement.

The workshop is designed to help parents with school-age children (5-10 years) understand child development and behavior. The focus is on coping strategies, problem solving techniques and communication styles that participants can use to enhance their skill as parents.

To register for the workshop, call the Clark County Family and Youth Services Department at 455-5295.

AARP, Henderson offer two-day class

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and the American Association of Retired Persons are co-sponsoring a two-day driving workshop for mature drivers (ages 50 or more) 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participation is $10, payable to the AARP at the class.

The workshop is intended to help senior drivers recognize physical limitations and how to best compensate for them. Curriculum will also assist participants to learn to sharpen their driving skills, avoid accidents and remain active drivers. Participants who successfully complete the course may qualify for reduced auto insurance premiums.

Bowling program will benefit children

The Bowl for Kids' Sake program benefiting Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Nevada will be held 9 a.m., 1 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and July 22 and 23.

Individuals can put together a team of four bowlers with each participant raising a minimum of $100 in pledges, or companies may sponsor teams of four for a minimum pledge of $400. Prizes such as a big-screen television, DVD player and airline tickets will be awarded to the individuals raising the most money in collected pledges.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters is a mentoring organization that matches children, ages 5 to 19, with caring adult volunteers in a variety of programs. There are nearly 200 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Legalities of dying

Southern Nevada Black Nurses Association will offer a program on living wills and durable power of attorney at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Doolittle Senior Center, 1950 N. J St. Forms will be provided and a notary will be available. Call 229-6125.
